The Himachal Pradesh HP government has made it mandatory for trekkers to carry a Global Positioning System (GPS) device to tackle any exigency. This decision was taken by Shrikant Baldi, Additional Chief Secretary cum-Pr. Secretary to Jai Ram Thakur, CM HP for the monsoon .

He said it was important that trekking and other 'yatras' were restricted during adverse weather. "It would be made mandatory for trekkers to have a GPS device so that they can be provided all possible help in case of any emergency," said Baldi.

Requirement : Being a disaster - prone area state, it is necessary for Himachal Pradesh to pay special heed to disseminating weather advisories as well as installing early warning systems in state. It is also important to restrict trekking and other yatra undertaken in state during adverse weather.

Significant : All possible help in case of any emergency.

While Kullu and Dalhousie have been identified for installation of early warning systems, Rampur and Mandi towns have been zeroed in for setting up the relief and rescue base of National Disaster Response Force.
