India Post GDS Job Profile 2026 – Post-wise Duties

The brief job profiles of different categories of Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) are given below:


1. Branch Postmaster (BPM) – GDS Job Profile

The job profile of Branch Postmaster (BPM) includes the following duties:

  • Managing day-to-day postal operations of the Branch Post Office (BO) and India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) as prescribed by the Department.
  • Marketing and promotion of postal products and services and operating various services in Customer Service Centres (CSC).
  • In single-handed BOs, BPM is responsible for smooth and timely functioning of the office, including mail conveyance and mail delivery.
  • In BOs other than single-handed, BPM may be assisted by ABPM(s). However, BPM will perform combined duties of ABPM(s) whenever required.
  • Any other work assigned by superiors such as Mail Overseer (MO), Inspector of Posts (IPO), Assistant Superintendent of Posts (ASPO), Superintendent of Post Offices (SPOs) or Senior Superintendent of Post Offices (SSPOs).

Residence / Accommodation for BPM:

  • Selected GDS BPM candidates must provide accommodation for the Branch Post Office before engagement.
  • The candidate must reside in the post village where the BO is located.
  • The accommodation must meet the standards prescribed by the Department.

2. Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) – GDS Job Profile

The job profile of Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) includes:

  • Sale of stamps and stationery, conveyance and delivery of mail at the doorstep, and exchange of mail with the Account Office.
  • Handling deposits, payments and other transactions of India Post Payments Bank (IPPB).
  • Assisting the BPM in postal operations as prescribed by the Department.
  • Marketing and promotion of postal products and services through CSCs.
  • Performing combined duties of BPM in case of non-availability of BPM, as ordered.
  • Any other work assigned by superiors such as MO, IPO, ASPO, SPOs or SSPOs.

Residence for ABPM:

  • ABPMs are required to reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Branch Post Office (BO).

3. Dak Sevak – GDS Job Profile

Dak Sevaks may be engaged in Sub Post Offices, Head Post Offices, Departmental Offices, and Railway Mail Service (RMS) offices.

  • Sale of stamps and stationery, conveyance and delivery of mail at the doorstep.
  • Handling deposits, payments and other IPPB transactions.
  • Performing duties in Railway Mail Service (RMS) sorting offices, if required.
  • Handling receipt and dispatch of mailbags and transhipment of mailbags in mail offices.
  • Assisting Postmasters and Sub Postmasters in smooth functioning of Post Offices.
  • Performing marketing, business procurement and any other work assigned by Postmaster or supervisory officers.

Residence for Dak Sevak:

  • Dak Sevaks must reside within the delivery jurisdiction of the concerned Head Office (HO) or Sub Office (SO).
